“The laws of nature are but the mathematical thoughts of God”

– Euclid

“The first complete edition of Euclid’s works” (Zeitlinger)

An incredible folio edition of Euclid’s “Elementorum Geometricorum.” This edition contains the whole of Euclid’s works:

  • “The Elements” – considered the most successful texts on mathematics and logic
  • “Data” – essay on advanced geometric propositions
  • “Phaenomena” – treatise on spherical astronomy
  • “Catoptirca” – treatise on mathematical theory of mirrors
  • “Opusculum de levi, ponderosa” – a fragment of this work was discovered after the first edition of this work in 1537!

The works of Euclid printed in Basil, was published by Johann Herwagen from 1533-1558, all of which were folio. Philip Melanchthon provided an introduction for the 1537 first edition and was retained for this second printing (often missing from many printings), however, this printing is formatted quite differently from the first.

“from many copies this introduction has been removed by the clerical censor […]. As there does not appear to be anything objectionable in the introduction itself, this action of the censor must have arisen from hostility to the writer of it.” (Thomas-Standord 11).

This edition of “Elements” was translated from Greek by Zamberti.
