Diodorus Siculus was an ancient Greek historian from the first century B.C. primarily remembered for one surviving work: ‘Bibliotheca historica’. This work is notable for containing a history of early Macedonia, a description of the Trojan War, as well as the conquests and eventual death of Alexander the Great. This 1547 Venice edition of Diodorus’s account of Alexander the Great is incredibly rare and valuable much in part to the impressive provenance! (see below).

This particular bookplate belonged to Franz Joseph II (1906–1989), the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein from 1938 until his death in 1989. He was a popular sovereign, being the first ruling prince to live full-time in the principality.
