1548 Rodolphus Agricola De Inventione Dialectica Dutch Humanism Rhetoric & Logic
Rudolph Agricola was a 15th-century Dutch humanist primarily remembered for his best book ‘De Inventione Dialectica”. Agricola spent much of his career in education, teaching various subjects and fields; however, his lessons were rooted in rhetoric and language dialect. This propelled him to write his book “On Dialectical Invention” which argued for the use for rhetoric and logic in all facets of education. According to Hamilton,
“The significance of De inventione dialectica for the history of argumentation is that it assimilated the art of dialectic to that of rhetoric. Agricola focused on the topics rather than the analytics of Aristotle and on Cicero.”
This 1548 edition is exceedingly rare, especially in the Americas. Only one copy is found in any institution in the Western Hemisphere, per the USTC.
