Janus Cornarius was a 16th-century scholar who is known for his works on a variety of subjects including Hippocratic and Galen medicine, Dioscorides pharmacology, commentary on Chrysostom and Plato, Greek and Roman banquet traditions, and so much more. Cornarius displayed a fondness for medical studies, and in this work, he notes the transmissibility of the plague especially through physical contact. Interestingly, this book takes a turn as Cornarius hints that the plague was a divine punishment from God, much like in the Old Testament.

 

This 1551 edition of ‘De Peste’ was published in Basel by Herwagen and is notoriously rare. In fact, there is only one known copy in any American institution!
