1553 AUSTRIA 1ed Cuspinianus Holy Roman Empire OTTOMAN Turks Military Rome FOLIO
An enormous 16th-century tome of the works of Cuspinianus!
Johannes Cuspinianus was an early 16th-century scholar known best known for his extensive study of Roman and Holy Roman emperors. “De Caesaribus et Imperatoribus”, which was first published posthumously the 1540s, proved to be an invaluable resource of humanistic perspective on the lives of ancient emperors. In fact, it is one of the few works that was responsible for reviving interest in classical history in the 16th-century.
Cuspiniani describes the lives of countless figures including some of the following:
- Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor
- Septimus Severus
- Constantine – heirs including Constans I
- Adolf, King of the Romans
- Albert I of Habsburg
This enormous 16th-century tome of the works of Cuspiniani includes not only “Imperatorius” but also his lesser-known works including “Turcorum Religio” – a work describing the military, religious, and daily practices of the Turks, with special attention given to the influence on Christianity on the Ottoman Empire.
While much of this tome is from the 1561 edition, one portion is from the 1553 first edition – the work “Austria”- a description of the political climate in Austria at the turn of the 16th-century.
