Vincenzo Cartari was a 16^th-century Italian mythologist and Renaissance author. His most famous work “Imagini Colla Sposizione” (“Images depicting the gods”) is an important treatise on the mythology and the iconography of the gods. Cartari explains their forms and appearance as well as several of their important attributes. He wrote this book with the sole purpose of aiding sculptors and painters who were seeking guidelines of the physical appearances of the gods. He focused on their clothing, expressions, and poses in which they were most often presented.

While this 1556 first edition is unillustrated, many editions following this printing included engravings. It became the most important handbook used by artists for the next three centuries!
