Papinius Statius was a 1st-century Roman poet remembered for his epic poems ‘Thebaid’, ‘Silvae’ and ‘Achilleid’. These works tell famous stories of mythology and iconic heroes – namely Oedipus and Achilles. These poems were known to have had significant influence on Juvenal as well as into the 12th-century on Chaucer, Dante, and Boccaccio as well as Dryden and Grotius in the Renaissance.
This 1559 edition is incredibly rare! It was published in Lyon by Sebastien Gryphe and includes each of the three expected works of Statius.
