Gilbert Cognatus Nozerenus, better known today as Gilbert Cousin, was a 16th-century humanist and Greek translator. He was a student of Erasmus of Rotterdam, with whom he kept close ties throughout his career, certainly influencing Cousin’s translations and commentaries. He translated works of Plutarch, Aristotle, and Xenophon, as well as the satirical works of Lucian of Samosata.
Lucian of Samosata was a 2nd-century Greek satirist who wrote a variety of works including comedies, dialogues, essays, and commentaries. He discusses mythological figures such as Hercules, Achilles, Zeus, Timon of Athens, Hermes, and others.
This 1563 edition of Cousin’s “Lucian” was published in Basel by Sebastian Henri Petri, bound in three original-vellum tomes.
