Theodoret of Cyrus was a 5^th-century early Christian church bishop. He played a critical role in many Byzantine controversies which led to various ecumenical acts and schisms. He wrote numerous exegetical and dogmatic works, along with a historical look at early ecclesiastics. He was also responsible for notes on heresies and the lives of notable early church monks, as well as an important commentary on the Old and New Testaments.

This 1567 folio edition of Theodoret’s Bible commentary was published in Cologne by Birckman in two volumes. Note the impressive, illustrated initials.
