Johannes Sleidanus was a 16^th-century historian who is best remembered for his commentary and analysis of the Protestant Reformation. He collected as all papers and manuscripts concerning the Reformation to which he had access (particularly those of Martin Luther) and edited them as part of his ‘Commentary on State, Religion, and Republic’. And while his contributions to the growth of popularity of the Reformation was his greatest work, he also published a book on the history of the world.

‘The Four Empires’, also known as ‘The Key of History’, is a methodical history of four the most important kingdoms of the world – Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. He describes important world events, beginning with Flood of Noah, through Roman emperors, the reign of Alexander the Great, and much more.

This 1574 edition also offers a glimpse into the state of the Holy Roman Empire under Charles V.

While it is unclear who possessed this specific bookplate, the family contains several notable members who inherited the title of Lord Porchester, such as Henry John George Herbert, 3rd Earl of Carnarvon (1800–1849), author of the tragic play Don Pedro, King of Castile; Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon (1831–1890), twice Secretary of State for the Colonies and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland; and George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1866–1923), the financial backer of the search for and excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
