Abraham Fleming was a 16th-century English translator and poet most known for his famed translation of Virgil’s “Eclogues”. And while his Virgil editions brought him fame, he is perhaps best remembered by his 1576 treatise on dogs. To this point in print history, very few works were published on pets and dogs in general. “Of Englishe Dogges” was “the first book in English devoted entirely to dogs” (Marston), though it was essentially a translation of John Caius’s “De Canibus Britannicis”.

This book describes breeds and habits of dogs, but the book most covers the roles of dogs in hunting. Fleming notes the use of bloodhounds in chasing rabbits, foxes, badgers, weasels, and many other types of game.

This 1880 edition is a reissue of the original 1576 complete with a facsimile of the original title page.
