Girolamo Ruscelli was a 16th-century Italian author and printer who translated and edited a great number of classical works. To earn a living, he found work with a printer who allowed him to publish his own works; however, many of his works were not published until after his death. One of his most notable original works was his ‘Commentary on the Italian Language’. Because he and many other writers were translating Greek and Latin classics, a workable and useable language guide was necessary. As per the title of the work, Ruscelli notes that this work is ‘easy to use’.

‘Commentary’ is divided in to seven distinct parts

  • Dealing with language
    • Human rationality
    • Human voice
  • Analyzation of parts of speech
    • Names of articles of language
    • Pronouns
    • Verbs
  • Language according to women, children, and foreigners
  • Eloquent speaking
  • Errors in language
  • Rhetoric and ornamentation
  • Synonyms and epithets & and forms that break language rules

A fine, 1581 first edition of this Ruscelli classic.
