1581 FAMED Life of Christ 1ed 100s Renaissance Bible Woodcuts Ludolph of Saxony
‘Vita Christi’, more commonly called the ‘Mirror of the Life of Christ’, is a rare 14th-century work by Ludolph of Saxony. This book, while seemingly just a biographical sketch of Jesus contains numerous liturgical texts, prayers, devotions, and historical commentaries. This book was known to have heavily influenced Saint Ignatius of Loyola and his ‘Spiritual Exercises’ along with numerous other Jesuit and Catholic writers.
This 1581 edition was the first Zilettum edition, published in Venice in an enormous, vellum-bound folio. The engraved title page is a stunning view which the OCLC calls an “exuberant architectural woodcut…featuring figures of women, cherubs, and grotesque heads, the rocks-in-a storm-at-sea device of Domenico and Giovanni Battista”. In addition to the title page, this edition features nearly 200 woodcut scenes depicting the life of Jesus each with Renaissance-style borders.
