“An important multilingual dictionary offering many subjects in German, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, and sometimes English.” – Adams (J, 450).

Hadrianus Junius (1511-1575) was devoted to linguistics, lexicography, and philological work. He is most-remembered now for his emblematica, but in creating his ‘Emblems,’ he also wrote this dictionary. He scoured through existing encyclopedias and other lexicons to write his own. He was greatly influenced by Byzantine writing, and his successful research was noted as accurate by his contemporaries.

The vast majority of Junius’s works were published by either Plantin or Froben, two very well-known and respected 16th-century publishers. Christopher Plantin, the publisher of this work, published only 2,500 copies of this edition – a reissue of the 1577.
