Justus Lipsius was an important 16th-century Flemish philosopher whose work was written to restore a form of Stoicism that would be similar to Christian values. Perhaps his most controversial work was ‘The Cross’ – a book describing torture and execution devices relating to the cross. It was in this work that Lipsius claimed that perhaps Jesus was crucified on a vertical stake, rather than a traditional cross.

This book describes other forms of crucifixion accompanied by truly gruesome illustrations – full body impalement, X shaped or St. Andrew’s cross, inverted crosses, burning alive while crucified, and low-hanging crucifixion to allow for being eaten alive by animals. Lipsius also discusses the types of trees that were most used in crucifixion tortures and examines the techniques used to construct such devices.

First editions of this book are exceedingly rare and are markedly desirable.
