Battista Guarini was a 16th-century Italian poet who was best-known for his tragedy ‘Il Pastor Fido’, a story of the marriage of Duke of Savoy and Catharine of Austria. He provided libretti for Renaissance opera composers and texts for madrigals, but he also wrote numerous letters – letters that would become popular for their beautiful language. Most of these letters were written to nobles and high-class figures in Venice and Florence. In 1593, Guarini’s letters were first published and would see numerous editions, including this 1595 Ciotti edition.
