1596 Bible & Letters of Saint Jerome Church History Asceticism Louvain Unicorn
“When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting.”
– Jerome, Epistle 58
Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his ‘Epistles.’ These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.
This 1596 Latin edition was edited by Petrus Canisius and Marianus Victorius and is notable for featuring the Louvain Unicorn printer’s device on the title page!
