1605 Brussels Massacre 1ed Anti-Semitic Jews TORTURE Sacrament of Miracle Ydens
Etienne Ydens’s “History of the Sacrament of Miracle” is a rare, early 17th-century anti-Semitic leaning view of Christian devotion. This work is one of the earliest to thoroughly describe the Brussels Massacre and the Cult of the Miracle. In 1370, a small group of Jews in Brussels were falsely accused of desecrating the Holy Sacrament by stealing Eucharist elements and desecrating them which caused them to bleed. This ‘miracle’ was thought to be a sign or proof of the presence of the Heavenly Host.
Ydens’s book is a reliable resource of the event, but also serves as a reminder of the dangers of religious intolerance and anti-Semitic views.
This 1605 first edition of “Histoire du S. Sacrement de Miracle” includes numerous engravings depicting scenes from the event – note the views of torture, stabbings, and burnings at the stake!
