Beginning 1565, English historian John Stow published his landmark work “Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles”. In this book, Stow describes the origins of Great Britain, both Scotland and England, and its people – a work that would evolve and included numerous additions through the 17th-century. Stow also provides details on English castles and dungeons, parishes and cathedrals, the feuds between Anglican and Catholic religious bodies, kings, wars, and much, much more.

Following Stow’s death in the early 1600s, Edmund Howes continued Stow’s original work with more editions. This 1607 first edition was the first edition that Howes would publish of Stow’s masterpiece; an edition that still utilized the gothic script that was customary of “Stow’s Chronicle”.

Curiously, while this example lacks title page, we are unable to locate any example that does include a title page – all found 1607 first editions lack the title page.
