Aristophanes was an ancient Athenian Greek playwright, remembered for his comedy plays and examples of drama known as Old Comedy. Writing during the 4th-century BC, Aristophanes was lesser-known than other Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Aristophanes’ plays were written for festivals in Athens and the Theatre of Dionysus.
This exceedingly rare early 17th-century folio edition was published in Geneva and edited by Edouard Biseti de Charlais.

- Possibly John Pickering (1777–1846), an American linguist, lawyer, and politician in Salem, Massachusetts. He served as president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1839 to 1846. In this inscription, Pickering mentions that he obtained this volume in an exchange with a Mr. Ticknor, which could be referencing George Ticknor (1791–1871), an American academician and Hispanist, specializing in the subject areas of languages and literature.
