An extremely rare printing of Guillaume du Bartas’s “The Semaines”, or “Creation of the World”. It was immensely popular after its initials release in 1578, being a poem consisting of seven sections (days), each devoted to the aspect of the world created on that day of the first week. The poetry closely follows the first few chapters of the Bible and is to navigate the stories on each day of Creation and the subsequent stories in Genesis including Noah’s Ark, Cain and Abel, Tower of Babel, and growth of humanity through knowledge.

This particular 1613 English translation was collected and edited by Joshua Sylvester. Sylvester’s translation, commonly known as “The Divine Weeks”, is easily the best and most important translation of Bartas. It also includes a portion of “La Muse Chrestienne”, the biblical epic of “Judith”.
