Zacharia Visconti was an early 17th-century exorcist who made important contributions the effectiveness of exorcisms, much of which is due to his exorcism manual, ‘Complementum artis Exorcisticae’. In this work, Visconti makes many important notes, none more important than clearly defining the purpose of an exorcism – “to impose silence on the devil.” He continues by explaining the various types of languages which are used in exorcisms – human language with words, angel language with that of the mind, and God’s language through deeds.

Because of this, he claims that

“the loss of voice is one of the most frequent effects of demonic possession. Influencing our humors, devils can blur our senses and thus make us feverish, mute, deaf, and obsessed by internal images; in a world they make us sick with melancholy.” (Maggi, p. 108)

Visconti also describes a demon’s ability to cause physical sores on a human body, or as he puts it, ‘signs of the possessed.’ These physical ailments are just one of 25 physical signs that Visconti notes should be looked for in an exorcism. Others include refusal to eat, uncontrollably weeping, sudden terrors, unexplained hostility, teeth grinding, animal noises, foaming of the mouth, suicide attempts, feeling frigid or burning vapors, and Gospel reading causes physical harm to victim. (Seitz, p.137)
