1620 Lipsius Sichemiensis Aspricollis Holy Roman Empire Miracles Virgin Halle
Justus Lipsius was an important 16th-century Flemish philosopher whose work was written to restore a form of Stoicism that would be similar to Christian values. In 1595, Lipsius was appointed Royal historian by Archduke Albert and Isabella who asked him to write devotional tracts honoring the Virgin Mary of Halle. Lipsius, traditionally a Lutheran, wrote two works which supported the political agenda of the Holy Roman Empire – ‘Diva Virgo Hallensis’ and ‘Diva Sichemiensis sive Aspricollis’. These works, particularly Sichemiensis, was written on the miracles and ‘occult’ theology of the Virgin of Halle.
