Johannes Andreas Coppenstein was a 17^th-century Dominican clergy known for his controversial writings during the Counter-Reformation. While he served as a preacher, his 17^th-century ‘journalism’ proved to be the epitome of discussing and covering Cardinal controversies – none more prominent than those of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine.

This enormous, Mainz-printed edition of Coppenstein’s commentary and survey of Bellarmine’s “Controversies” (i.e. his lectures) was published over a series of years highlighting Bellarmine’s attempts at systemizing disputes between Catholics and Protestants. In fact, much of Bellarmine’s career was devoted to these religious struggles – all of which are apparent in this edition of Coppenstein.
