Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Guillaume Bouchet was a relatively unknown French author from the 16th-century whose works were overshadowed by more popular authors. One of his few works to receive literary praise was his “Serees” (i.e. ‘evening conferences’), a collection of short, humorous and satirical ‘after-dinner’ tales. Bouchet used this book to direct readers on how conversation should be held, especially with regard to ‘frank speech’, self-confidence, and social awareness.

This book was known to have been a direct influence of Laurence Sterne’s “Tristram Shandy”, whose narrator was self-conscious in his speaking with others.

This 1634-35 first edition was published in Rouen by Loudet.
