Ferdinand of Austria, the Cardinal-Infante, was the brother of Philip IV, King of Spain. Ferdinand served Spain and Portugal as the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and archbishop of the Catholic Church. However, he is best remembered for being a general during the Thirty Years’ War and one of the final officers of the Spanish-Portuguese Empire under Philip IV.

 

Author Diego de Aedo y Gallart, secretary and advisor to the king, wrote an important survey to Ferdinand’s military voyages between 1632 and 1634 ending with the famous Battle of Nördlingen. This 1635 first edition was translated by Jules Chifflet.
