Michel Zachmoorter was a 17^th-century Belgian theologian who was one of the leading figures in the Counter-Reformation in Ghent, Belgium. One of his most controversial books was “Thalamus Sponsi oft t’ Bruydegoms Beddeken” – a treatise supporting the traditions of mysticism that were originally developed in the Spanish Netherlands.

“Thalamus Sponsi” primarily deals with personal devotion and prayer as it pertains to a contemplative lifestyle, all through the lens of medieval mysticism. Zachmoorter collected writings from notable mystics including 16^th-century Spanish mystic John of the Cross. In fact, Zachmoorter was the first to translate John of the Cross’s mystical teachings into Dutch, including significant portions of his work “Living Flame of Love” into “Thalamus”.

This 1635 edition was published in Antwerp and features an impressive, engraved title page.
