A rare 16th-century edition of Heliodorus’s only known work, ‘Aethiopica’. Written sometime in the 3rd or 4th-century, this work tells the story and history of the development of Ethiopia through the lens of an ancient Greek romance novel. It is also believed that that Torquato Tasso took significant liberties from ‘Aethiopica’ and used them in his famous book ‘Jerusalem Delivered’.
This highly collectable 1637 Latin edition was published in Leiden by Marse and titled simply “Heliodorus”.
