Richard Baker was a 16^th-century English Protestant historian who chronicled the royals of England as well as a curious meditation on prayer. ‘Meditations and Disquisitions Upon the Lords Prayer’ was first published in 1637 and was written to instruct the importance of prayer in one’s spiritual life. Baker even notes the importance of praying aloud in order

“to fright the devil. For, he sees not our hearts, but he hears our tongues: and when he hears our words…he fears they come from our hearts, in that fear he trembles!” (p.6)
