Thomas Smith was a 16^th-century English diplomat who is best remembered for his failed attempt to colonize parts of Ireland with English settlers. However, prior to his colonization attempts, Smith wrote his most famous book ‘De Republica Anglorum’. It was with this book that Smith described England’s government style as a commonwealth. This work has become a staple in the study of the English constitution.

This 1641 French edition was translated out of the original English by Joannes de Laet, published by the famed Elzevier printing house.
