Francis Rous was a 17th-century English Puritan whose political influence prompted numerous anti-Catholic treatises. Perhaps his most vicious was his attack on Tobie Matthew’s “Charity Mistaken”. Matthew claimed that Protestants were not and could not be saved since “there was no salvation outside of the jurisdiction of the pope and the Catholic Church” (Matthews). Rous took exception to this and published his book “Catholick Charitie” to essentially make the same claims against the Catholic Church.
