Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Girard Desargues was an early 17th-century French mathematician known for his foundational studies on geometry. In 1640, he wrote a treatise on the proper way of placing and identifying the radius of gnomonic sundials. This work features 69 impressive illustrations by Abraham Bosse, who illustrates shadows, clocks, and sundials.

Curiously though, the DNB notes that no known copies of the 1640 exist thus calling the 1643 the actual first edition. (*note – it is unknown whether there was an actual print run for the 1640, which is why this is considered the first edition.)
