1646 Discoveries in America Inventions ALCHEMY Guido Panciroli Memorabilium
Guido Panciorli was a 16th-century Italian historian known for his most popular book ‘Memorabilium’ – a 1612 work which gives a general account of inventions and technology in Europe as well as discoveries in America. Bigmore & Wyman claim that the frontispiece, which depicts a printer’s room, was used as that in the early days of typography it was customary to employ anagnostes (slaves used to read-aloud). According to Ferguson,
“Pancirollo’s work is interesting, not only as giving some notion of the state of knowledge as to the history of invention in his time, but as displaying the attitude of scholars towards the practical arts of the ancient.”
This work has an important section on alchemy and pseudo-science findings.
