Spelman’s “Tithes Too Hot to be Touched” was written as a result of the feuds over tithing in the Church of England. The controversy of tithes was one of the most prominent disagreements during the Civil Wars, but Spelman sought to take a middle approach by defending the need for tithes but scolding those who used the tithe money immorally or for selfish gain.

This 1646 first edition of ‘Tithes’ was published alongside “An Apology of the Treatise De Non Temerandis Ecclesiis”.
