1647 Francis Bacon History of Henry VII England Tudor Dynasty ELZEVIR Philosophy
“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
An extremely rare Elzevier printing of Bacon’s “History and Reign of Henry VII”. According to Willems, these Hackium publications were printed from the house of Elzevier. In this book, Bacon provides a detailed account of the life of Henry VII, however, not just from a historical perspective, but also providing a sense of the character of the king. From Bacon himself:
“He was careful and liberal to obtain good intelligence from all parts abroad… Towards his Queen he was nothing uxorious; nor scarce indulgent; but companiable and respective, and without jealousy. Towards his children he was full of paternal affection, careful of their education, aspiring to their high advancement” (Craik)
However, because of his attitude and often lackadaisical temperament, he was thought of as an incompetent leader unable to overcome serious difficulties. Francis Bacon creates one of the best biographical sketches of the late-15th-century English monarch.
