Guatier de La Calprenede was a 17th-century French novelist. Calprenede, with his plays and novels, found favor with Queen Anne of Austria and her husband, King Louis XIII of France in 1650. While serving the royal family, Calprenede fell in love with one the Queen’s maidens who agreed to marry him on the condition that he complete his lengthy novel ‘Cleopatra’. He agreed, however, the novel took more than 10 years to complete and wasn’t finished until 1657. Nevertheless, ‘Cleopatra’ became one of his most important and oft-read novels.
