1649 Augustine of Hippo Meditations + Anselm & Saint Bernard Clairvaux Miniature
Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most known for his work ‘City of God’, he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs predestination and fatalism were supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.
Saint Augustine’s ‘Meditations’ is a collection of early church prayers and devotions along with teachings designed for priests and monks. It also includes the treatises and meditations of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and Saint Anselm of Canterbury which helped define Saint Augustine’s stance on original sin.
This 1649 edition of the works of Augustine includes ‘Meditations’ and ‘Soliloquies’ translated by Henricus Sommalius.
