A fascinating 17th-century attack on King James I’s character

Anthony Weldon was a 17th-century English politician who is best known for his book ‘The Court and Character of King James I’. This book has long been famous for one specific line, that King James was “the wisest fool in Christendom”. Weldon had previously been banished from King James’ court after publishing negative evaluations of the King’s rulership.

First published in 1650, this work itself was contentious with Jacobean apologists. Weldon notably presented King James as a “perverted, hypocritical, slobbering villain” of whom he was exceedingly critical. (ODNB). Lowndes furthers the descriptions of this book, providing more exposure to the negative responses garnered by Weldon:

“a despicable issue of filth and obscenity, of falsehood and malignity.”
