Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Established by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635, the French Academy, or Academie francaise, was a scholarly institution designed to regulate and protect French academics and language. In 1653, while serving as the primary historian for the academy, author Paul Pellisson published the first and most comprehensive history of the Academie. Pellisson worked directly with Cardinal Richelieu and Jean-Baptiste Colbert to legitimize the academy as well as strengthen the Academy’s authority within and outside of France as it pertained to the French language.

This 1653 first edition of Pellisson’s “Relation” is truly rare and valuable. In fact, a second edition wasn’t published until 1729, and even those copies still retain collector value.
