Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most-known for his work ‘City of God’, he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs predestination and fatalism was supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.

‘City of God’ was a response to the assertions that the rise of Christianity was the cause of the decline of Rome. In this work, Augustine discusses the existence of God and evil, an all-knowing God, original sin, and Christian doctrines. Augustine sought to denounce much of the magic and pagan worship that was rampant throughout the known world.

This rare 1655 French edition was edited by Rene de Ceriziers and includes a full-page portrait of Jacques le Coigneux, president of Parliament.
