1656 FINE Fleur-de-lis Church History 4th-c Chronicle Elzevier Sulpicius Severus
Sulpicius Severus’s 4th-century chronicles were some of the most important pre-Middle Ages works of sacred history. He discussed the world events from Creation through the start of the 5th-century. He focused on what the ideal church should look like, as well as setting precedents for rulers, and how their crimes should be handled. Other works known of Severus include his biographical account of the life of Saint Martin, along with letters, correspondence and dialogues.
This rare edition, printed in 1656, was published by the famed Amsterdam printing house, Elzevier. It is worth noting that while other 17th-century examples of this and similar works exist, few have such a binding – a French armorial binding with fleur-de-lis pressed over the entirety of both boards!
