1664 History of Masaniello Revolt in Naples Italy Giraffi English Habsburg Spain
A fine English translation of Alessandro Giraffi’s “An Exact History of the Late Revolutions in Naples.” This first-hand account of the revolt against Habsburg Spain in Naples in 1647. Masaniello, a local Italian fisherman, led a revolt which ransacked armories and prisons in Naples – a historical event that has been retold, painted, and argued for centuries. Masaniello was described as,
“…a young man of twenty-seven, beautiful and graceful in appearance, his face was brown and somewhat burned by the sun: black eyes, blond hair, with locks that ran down his neck.” (St. John., 68)
This fine book, finely rebound in Moroccan red leather, includes a full-page woodcut portrait of Masaniello.
This book is considered very rare. The translator, James Howell, was the ‘author of the most curious volumes in English literature’ (Hawkins, Library Catalog, 1990)
