Etienne Binet was a 16th-century Jesuit author who wrote several works on Catholic church fathers, the Virgin Mary, various Catholic liturgies, and marvels and wonders of the world. Also known by his pseudonym Rene Francois, Binet wrote a book based on his own observations and recollections of mysteries of the world.

‘Essay on Wonders of Nature’ covers a multitude of topics, most of which in brief, but nevertheless, Binet discusses their usefulness in the world and the properties of their existence. Such topics include:

  • Gardens and flowers
  • Architecture and perspective
  • The human voice and eloquent speaking
  • Paper, glass, embroidery, dyes
  • Fish and animals
  • Hunting and falconry
  • Dog fights
  • Mythical creatures – phoenix
  • Heraldry
  • Wars; duels; weapons; fireworks and gunpowder
  • Gold and silver mining and refining

However, Binet does not merely describe his own observations. He claims many of the items in his work to have healing powers. One such instance is his claim that powdered pearls are a cure-all, making cases that the remora fish is more than just whale excrement, and that stars can control aspects of human fate!
