“Every educational reformer owes much, in the way of inspiration and suggestion, to his predecessors, and of none is this truer than of John Amos Comenius.”

– Will S. Monroe, Comenius and the Beginnings of Educational Reform”

Shortly after ‘Janua Linguarum Reserata was first published in 1629, it was translated into nearly every European language. In fact, by the 1630s, it was the second most read book in Europe, second only to the Bible. This textbook by Johann Amos Comenius was simply a text of Language, as the English title suggests, “The Door of Languages Unlocked.”

Janua comprehends the elements of all the sciences and arts – from the origin of words to the mind and its faculties.” (Monroe, 126).

It was written with 1,000 short sentences comprising of roughly 8,000 words. In all, there have been over 100 editions of this book printed! Comenius is now remembered as an innovator, who first introduced pictorial textbooks written in native languages rather than Latin.

This Elzevier edition was published by Daniel Elzevier after Louis Elzevier’s original 1643 printing. (Willems). It contains the Latin, Greek, and French versions, but does not contain the indices that are in previous editions. (Goldsmid).
