1665 Puritan GREEK Bible & Common Prayer & Psalms of David John Field Cambridge
An incredibly rare 17th-century John Field Greek version of the Psalms of David and Book of Common Prayer
The Cambridge Holy Bible, printed completely in Greek, was “sometimes known as the ‘Preaching Bible’.” (Herbert 697). John Field printed Greek Bibles are extremely rare and popular amongst Greek scholars and still used by 21st-century preachers.
This John Field Bible is ‘Variation A’ of his Greek Bible. According to D&M,
“the figure in the oval device Alma Mater Contabrigia on the title page is holding the sun in the right hand and the cup in the left, while the motto Hinc lucem… begins at the bottom on the left side. Field’s own original edition!” (D&M 4701) *
Darlow and Moule notes that
“Field’s edition was counterfeited page for page, by John Hayes, a Cambridge printer, who executed an edition in 1684, to which he put Field’s name, and date of 1665.”
This edition of the Book of Psalms is NOT the Hayes counterfeit.
