Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Giovanni Benedetto Sinibaldi was a 17th-century physician and progressive thinking on human sexuality and reproduction. He is chiefly remembered for his work ‘Geneanthropeia’ or ‘Rare Varieties, The Cabinet of Venus Unlocked’. This work is an extremely rare medical treatise that focuses on sexual intercourse, and human production.

Sinibaldi discussed many controversial topics in ‘Geneanthropeiae’ such as sex addiction, minors engaging in sex, and ways to identify virgins.

While trying to arouse and entice his readers, Sinibaldi mentions that children should not have to try to be sneaky to engage in sex at a young age, in fact parents should encourage it! (Knowles, p.928). He also offers techniques for different positions of coitus, even though he was rather ignorant to the female reproductive system. He also discusses the effects of minerals, plants, and animals on virgin women – he claims that virgins cannot endure the smell of Lilies and that honeybees will seek out sexually active persons. (Floyd-Wilson, p.95)
