Following the death of Pope Alexander VII in 1667, an election, or papal conclave, was established which ultimately set Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosias the pope. More commonly known as Clement IX, Rospigliosias began his papacy after not having any serious contenders against him, even though Spanish constituents preferred a Spanish pope.
