William Walker’s “Idiomatalogia” is a rare, 17th-century collection of Latin and English idioms. Walker, an English school teacher, wanted to provide his students with clarity on many of the phrases they were saying, often misinterpreting. He states in his preface his intention:

“I found a need and want of such a book as this – a book to direct and help young scholars to render idioms of the English tongue according to the propriety of the Latin [from] ridiculous barbarisms.”

Many of the phrases and idioms are from famous sources including Junius, Erasmus, Beza, Martial, Cicero, Julius Caesar, Ovid, Tacitus, the Bible, and many others.

This 1673 edition contains both English and Latin translations with the English in black letter.
