“An invaluable work…should be in every English library!” (Lowndes)

Beginning in 1678, Anthony Wood, an English historian and expert on all things Oxford, began compiling a great and notable work on the history of Oxford, both the university and its surroundings. Wood was given access to the archives in Oxford University and much of what he found there was published in this work – ‘Athenae Oxoniensis’. He copied monument transcriptions and discovered previously unknown antiquities about Oxford, its scholars, and bishops.

Wood provides biographical sketches on hundreds of individuals whose names were associated with Oxford Cathedral and University. Notable names include John Barlow, spy to Henry VIII; Peter Heylin, Erasmus, Queen Elizabeth, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Francis Bacon, Thomas More, Duns Scotus, John Wyclif, William Tyndale, famous bible translator, and much more!

This rare first Folio Latin edition was edited and translated by Richard Peers and Richard Reeve. Published in two parts, the first part dealing with the university itself and the second focusing on the various colleges.
