“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”

― Francis Bacon

An extremely rare printing of Francis Bacon’s “History and Reigns” which begins with that of Henry VII”. In this book, Bacon provides a detailed account of the life of Henry VII, however, not just from a historical perspective, but also providing a sense of the character of the king. From Bacon himself:

“He was careful and liberal to obtain good intelligence from all parts abroad… Towards his Queen he was nothing uxorious; nor scarce indulgent; but companiable and respective, and without jealousy. Towards his children he was full of paternal affection, careful of their education, aspiring to their high advancement” (Craik)

However, because of his attitude and often lackadaisical temperament, he was thought of as an incompetent leader unable to overcome serious difficulties. Francis Bacon creates one of the best biographical sketches of the late-15th-century English monarch. According to Bergeron,

“[This work] exists as Bacon’s only finished full-scale history of an era….[it is also] Bacon’s portrait of King Henry’s relationship with his wife Queen Elizabeth.”

This book has also been nicknamed “The first modern classic of English history”. It is a culmination of Bacon’s experience in politics and government and in a fine literary style, Bacon analyzes the King’s actions and political issues.

This volume also includes Bacon’s commentary on the reigns of King Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Queen Mary; also known as ‘Annals of England’ translated by Morgan Godwin.
